2012 gründeten Mike Monda (guitar, backing vocals), Kevin Mc Conell (keyboards, vocals) und Jay Heffner (drums) im kalifornischen Buellton die Band TEMPLE OF SWITCHES. Die Musiker waren bereits seit den Siebziger und Achtziger Jahren in unterschiedlichen Jam Bands aktiv. Da es offensichtlich schwer war einen geeigneten Bassisten zu finden, musste Mike´s Bruder Joe Monda aushelfen, der über 300 Meilen entfernt wohnte.
Das erste gleichnamige TEMPLE OF SWITCHES Album wurde 2014 aufgenommen und vor der Veröffentlichung im Jahe 2015 noch einmal überarbeitet. Der Silberling bietet 6 excellente Progressiv Rocktracks. Anspieltipp ist der Song "Desert Sands" der das Album beendet. Dieses Album gehört in jede Prog Rock CD Sammlung.
Warum es TEMPLE OF SWITCHES damit nicht gelungen ist einen Plattenvertrag zu bekommen darf als Rätsel der Musikgeschichte eingehen. Musikalisch und Handwerklich auf sehr hohem Niveau ballern TEMPLE OF SWITCHES ihre meisterhaften Songs, mit ihren wunderbaren Melodien äußerst druckvoll durch die Boxen. Guitarre, Keyboards, Drums und Gesang kommen wie aus einem Guss. Musikalische Einflüsse von RUSH, STYX und LED ZEPPELIN sind nicht von der Hand zu weisen.

primary writers Kevin(keys and vocals) and Mike(guitars) are on
opposite sides of the fence when it comes to their approach to music.
Mike likes the dark and dissonant and would rather not play at all than
compromise. Kevin on the other hand is perfectly at home in the pop
genre with a desire to appeal to the millions.
Lyrically
Mike draws from pain and sadness and typically paints a cloudy picture
where as Kevin is the inspiring optimist with his fist in the air. On
songs like "Desert Sands" and "The Positive side (part two) there is
almost an outright conversation between the two where the song dwells on
the sad and hopeless until Kevin steps in to let us know that it's not
that bad, and everything will be alright.
About half of
these songs were written decades ago with Mike's old band "Merry Cloud",
and in 2012 when approached to write and record keyboard parts and add
vocals to them, Kevin, who music normally flows out of freely, almost
hit a wall. "What am I going to do with this"!
The end
result is a perfect mixture of dark and beautiful, melodic and
dissonant, power and finess. Decidedly retro sounding with rich Hammond
organ tones through a gritty old Leslie, and every guitar sound in the
book.
For the rhythm section, Jay's approach to drumming
is powerful and at the same time complex and full of creative fills
(Neal Peart fans take note). Since the bands inception a few years ago
finding the right bass player had been quite a dilemma, cycling through
more than a handful of people, with Mikes brother Joe traveling over 300
miles to fill in when needed. When it came time to do the CD Joe
recorded the bass remotely."
Bei den zahlreichen farbenfrohen Liveauftritten können TEMPLE OF SWITCHES ihre Fangemeinde erweitern.
Doch TEMPLE OF SWITCHES haben noch mehr vor. Mit neuen Ideen, Gastsängerin Clara Hembree, den Gastdrummern Craig Camp und Gaetano Nicolosi und leider ohne Kevin Mc Conell, Joe Monda und Jay Heffner arbeitet Mike Monda (Drum Programming, Guitars, Keyboards, Bass) an neuen Songs. Weiter am Songprozess beteiligt waren bei dem Song "Carousel" Dale Wiser und Drummer David White (u.a. RATTLEFACE).
So erscheint im Juli 2017 die TEMPLE OF THE SWITCHES EP "Helium Parade". Das Coverphoto stammt von Kathy Monda und zeigt schon einmal die musikalische Richtung an. Musikalisch geht es düsterer zur Sache. Die eingängigen Melodien, die abwechslungsreichen Keyboards und den prägnante Gesang der Debutscheibe sucht man leider vergebens. Mike Monda lenkt TEMPLE OF SWITCHES nun in eine andere Richtung. Von den sieben Songs hat Mike Monda sechs im Alleingang komponiert und produziert.
Nicht das die Songs schlecht sind, nein sie sind nur wegen der fehlenden Trademarks des Debutalbums anders. Doch auch in diesem Psychedelic Musikbereich präsentieren sich TEMPLE OF SWITCHES handwerklich topp. Leichte CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, RUSH und JOHN ABERCROMBIE Einflüsse schimmern durch.

Für 2019 kündigen TEMPLE OF SWITCHES mit "Melba" ein neues Album an. Wohin darauf die musikalische Reise geht bleibt abzuwarten. Der Titeltrack ist ein Liebeslied und geht musikalisch in die Richtung Prog Rock der Siebziger Jahre mit einem gewissen Mood/Jazz Einfluss.
